Hi All

Yesterday Class 12 took an excursion to the ANSTO site to have a look at the Nuclear Reactor they have and learn more about how Nuclear Physics affects us everyday.
The Following is a student recount of the experience:

After arriving at the facility we were ushered into a lecture room where we were taught about various things involved with understanding the process the nuclear reactor goes through to produce neutrons used for scientific study. We learnt about the difference between research reactor and a power reactor, we also learnt about the radiation we come into contact with everyday, including use in medical facilities and the nullifying ability of many common items like water.
After this we were taken on site for a closer look at the reactor itself, unfortunately the reactor was in shutdown for maintenance but we still got a look at the reactor itself via camera. We learnt about what is made in the reactor and how it works. We were then moved to another building where we were informed about the various tools used to maintain and run the reactor. Unfortunately our visit ended there due to time constraints.
This was a unique experience with very interesting learning opportunities and we are all thankful for this excursion.

Charly
